How to Measure a Dog Collar and Harness Correctly

The correct size is essential for a collar or harness to fit securely while allowing your dog to move freely. Measure directly on your dog and compare the measurements with the size chart for the relevant product.

What you need

a flexible measuring tape
a dog standing calmly
the size chart on the product page

If you do not have a flexible measuring tape, use a piece of string and then measure its length with a ruler.

How to measure the neck for a dog collar

Place the measuring tape around the part of the neck where the collar will sit.
Measure close to the body without pulling the tape tight.
After adjustment, approximately two fingers should fit between the collar and the neck.
Compare the measured circumference with the adjustment range for the desired size.

If the measurement falls exactly on a size boundary, choose the larger size when in doubt and check that its adjustment range still provides a secure fit.

How to measure the chest for a dog harness

Measure around the widest part of the ribcage behind the front legs.
Keep the measuring tape straight around the body and do not twist it.
Also measure the neck area where the harness will rest.
Compare both measurements with the size chart. Both must fall within the stated range.

Check the fit after putting it on

All fasteners must click fully into place.
Straps must not cut in or rub under the front legs.
Your dog must not be able to back out of the collar or harness.
Check the fit again after a few minutes of movement.
For growing dogs, remeasure and readjust regularly.

Before every walk

Check webbing, rope, seams, rings, buckles and fasteners for wear or damage. Do not continue using damaged products. Reflective details improve visibility in poor light, but they do not replace active lighting or attentive handling.
